Since the summer of 1992, the VCR/LTER has monitored water quality in the VCR lagoons. Monitoring has focused on a transect across Hog Island Bay, extending from the mainland to the inlets between the barrier islands. In 2004, a second transect was added extending from Oyster Harbor to Cobb Island. Transects were sampled monthly until 2008 when sampling was changed to quarterly. Physical (temperature, dissolved oxygen, salinity, light), particulate (total suspended solids), nutrient (ammonium, nitrite + nitrate, phosphate, dissolved organic nitrogen) and biological (chlorophyll) data are collected.
