is strategically located with respect to a variety of terrestrial and
aquatic ecological systems that are found in the Cascade Physiographic
Province of Oregon.

If you are a student who is contemplating a career in field ecology and/or
natural resource management this could be the opportunity for you to find
out if you really have the aptitude and desire. You will be placed in an
ongoing, interdisciplinary research program where you will literally
immerse yourself in the questions being considered. You will learn how to
do science by actually formulating hypotheses, gathering data to test them,
analyzing the data, and presenting the data both orally and in the form of a
written report in publishable format.

Do not apply if you don't enjoy a challenge. Successful applicants will put
in long hours of hard work while enjoying some of the finest scenery in the
world.

Successful applicants will earn a stipend of $2500 (plus housing) for 10
weeks beginning on 13 June 1994 and ending on 19 August 1994. Projects will
involve ecologists who will supervise and guide students in research
activities that may include: forest ecology, aquatic ecology, insect
ecology, and vertebrate ecology. Preference will be given to students who
have completed their junior year, although outstanding sophomores will be
considered (recent graduates are not eligible). A valid motor vehicle
operator's license is required for all participants, as well as US
citizenship. Women and minorities are strongly urged to apply.

Completed applications will consist of the following supporting materials
(Deadline: 15 March 1994):

I'm crossposting this job ad from dbworld because for the first

status, the annual salary ranges from US$ 37,000 to US$ 45,000.

Humboldt University, the former University of Berlin, is located in the
Eastern part of the city, between the Brandenburger Tor and Alexanderplatz.
The University, which has mainly been confined to a teaching role
during the Communist era, is now going through a major restructuring,
and more than 150 new professors have been hired within the last
two years. The Department of Business Administration and Economics
currently consists of 25 tenured professors and about 15 junior faculty.
The department offers Master's and Ph.D. degrees in economics and
business administration, with a major in information systems.

Subject: Postdoctoral Research Associates in Computational Science and
Engineering

The announcement for the FY95 Postdoctoral Research Associates in
Computational Science and Engineering has just been placed on NSF's
electronic Science & Technology Information System (STIS) (NSF 94-104).
It is also attached at the end of this message. This very successful
program has been supporting postdocs from all disciplines for the last
four years; in FY94 sixteen postdocs were supported, 2 in Biology, 2 in
Chemistry, 3 in Computer Science, 3 in Engineering, 3 in Materials, 2 in
Math, and 1 in Physics.

This year the deadline for submission has been moved up to November 1,
1994.

DIVISION OF ADVANCED SCIENTIFIC COMPUTING OFFICE OF CROSS
DISCIPLINARY-ACTIVITIES DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 1, 1994 NATIONAL SCIENCE
FOUNDATION

CISE Postdoctoral Research Associates in Computational Science and
Engineering and, Associates in Experimental Science

The Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE)
Directorate of the National Science Foundation plans a limited number of
grants for support of Postdoctoral Research Associateships contingent upon
available funding. The Associates are of two types:

o Associateships in Computational Science and Engineering (CS&E
Associates) supported by the New Technologies Program in the Division of
Advanced Scientific Computing (DASC) in cooperation with other NSF CS&E
disciplines (CS&E Associates). The objective of these Associateship awards
is to increase expertise in the development of innovative methods and
software for applying high performance, scalable parallel computing systems
in solving large scale CS&E problems.

o Associateships in Experimental Science (ES Associates) supported
by the Office of Cross Disciplinary Activities (CDA) . The objective of the
ES Associateship awards is to increase expertise in CISE experimental
science by providing opportunities for associates to work in established
laboratories performing experimental research in one or more of the
research areas supported by the CISE Directorate.

These awards provide opportunities for recent Ph.D.s to broaden
their knowledge and experience and to prepare them for significant research
careers on the frontiers of contemporary computational science and
engineering and experimental science. It is assumed that CS&E Associates
will conduct their research at academic research institutions or other
centers or institutions which provide access, either on site or by network,
to high performance, scalable parallel computing systems and will be
performing research associated with those systems. It is assumed that ES
Associates will conduct their research in academic research institutions or
other institutions devoted to experimental science in one or more of the
research areas supported by the CISE Directorate.

Who may submit

Universities, colleges, and other research institutions as
described in Grants Proposal Guide (GPG), (NSF-94-2) are eligible to submit
proposals to this program. For CS&E Associateships the institution must
have access to high performance, emerging parallel computing systems. For
ES Associateships, the institution should have an established laboratory
performing research in CISE experimental areas, as described in Guide to
Programs, NSF 93-167. Associateship awards will be based on proposals
submitted by the sponsoring institution. The principal investigator will
serve as an unreimbursed scientific advisor for the research associate.
Research associates should not be listed as co-principal investigators.
Each proposal must include a research and training plan for the proposed
research associate in an activity of computational science and engineering
in any of the fields supported by DASC, other NSF CS&E programs or
experimental research supported by the CISE Directorate. To be eligible for
this support, individuals must: (1) be eligible to be appointed as a
research associate or research assistant professor in the institution which
has submitted the proposal, (2) fulfill the requirement for the doctoral
degree in computational science and engineering, computer science and
engineering or a closely related discipline by September 30, 1995.

Award Amounts, Stipends and Research Expense Allowances

Awards will range from $33,200-$46,200 for a 24 month period. The
award will include $29,000-$42,000 to support the Research Associate (to be
matched equally by the sponsoring institution). There will also be an
allowance of $4,200 to the sponsoring institution, in lieu of indirect
costs, as partial reimbursement for expenses incurred in support of the
research. The annual award to the research associate will be composed of
two parts: an annual stipend (salary and benefits) that may range from
$25,000-$38,000, and a $4,000 per year research expense allowance
expendable at the Associate's discretion for travel, publication expenses,
and other research-related costs. There is no allowance for dependents. The
effective date of the award cannot be later than January 1996.

Matching Funds

The institution must match the NSF award on a dollar for dollar
basis excluding the $4,200 granted in lieu of indirect costs. Matching
funds may come from grants from other NSF programs, other agencies'
programs, or from other institutional resources. Matching fund arrangements
are the responsibility of the submitting institution and must be detailed
in the budget request.

Evaluation and Selection

Proposals will be reviewed by panel in accordance with established
Foundation procedures and the general criteria described in the GPG
brochure, and additional criteria specific to the Postdoctoral Research
Associateships Program. The review panel will consider: the candidate's
ability, accomplishments, potential as evidenced by the quality and
significance of past research, long range career goals, the likely impact
of the proposed postdoctoral training and research on the future scientific
development of the applicant and on the parallel computing infrastructure
of the US (for CS&E Associates) or on Experimental Science in CISE
disciplines (for ES Associates), the aspects of the candidate's research
and education, such as broadening research associates' knowledge and
experience by a change in institution, advisor, or research area, and the
adequacy of the sponsoring institution's access to high performance and/or
experimental computational resources to support the proposed research.

Application Procedures and Proposal Materials

To be eligible for consideration, a proposal must contain forms
which can be found in the GPG brochure. Required are a Supplementary
Application Information Form (NSF Form 1225-one copy), a Current and
Pending Support Form (NSF Form 1239-one copy) to be completed by the
Principal Investigator (the scientific advisor), and one original and
twelve copies of:

RESEARCH TRAINING GROUP IN ECOLOGY AND EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY

The W.K. Kellogg Biological Station (KBS) of Michigan State
University offers graduate fellowships for students interested
in integrated, research-based training in ecology and
evolutionary biology. The focus of our training program is
Linking Levels of Ecological Organization, from genes to landscapes.

We feel that the best scientists will have a strong research
exposure to techniques and concepts from all levels of ecological
organization, and the ability to synthesize across levels. As major
components of this program we stress novel coursework, strong field
experiences and research-based training at a variety of levels of
ecological organization. The KBS is located on the shore of Gull Lake
in southwestern Michigan and supports a year-round research and training
program by 10 resident faculty, several postdoctoral associates and
approximately 20 resident graduate students.

A Research Training Group (RTG) grant from the NSF provides graduate
fellowship support, as well as funds for travel and research. We
invite applications from highly qualified individuals, especially
minority students.

There is a new opportunity for the Antarctic LTERs: "Postdoctoral
Research Fellowships in Biosciences Related to the Environment". This
is a program that originated in the Directorate for Biological
Sciences, which normally does not accept Antarctic proposals.

I have made an agreement with Carter Kimsey, the BIO program director,
that Antarctic LTER-related applications will be accepted for the
competition. As with the LTERs, the cost will be funded by Polar
Biology and Medicine. I expect to make no more than a few awards.

As you know, there are a number of LTER-related special competitions
that have been held by the Division of Environmental Biology.
Formerly, due to budget, there was no opportunity for the Antarctic
sites to take part in these competitions. I've been concerned lately
about providing Antarctic LTERs with similar opportunities to the
non-Antarctic LTERs. I also deal with the fact that PBM is in a near
level-funding climate. So, I'm starting small, with the post-doc
program. I feel bringing in younger scientists is a worthy place to
begin. I expect to make no more than a few awards, and only if they
are competitive in the overall competition. I can't make any
committments at this point for other opportunities.

The particulars:

DEADLINE (and they mean DEADLINE): December 1

I only learned of the program last week so there is a short time
frame. The application is not like a regular proposal though. The
abstract of the fellowship research is 200 words and the research and
training plan is 4 pages maximum. The conditions are also not like a
regular award.

PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENT:

This is NSF 94-114. You can call or send me an e-mail if you want a
copy. I'm gone October 21 through November 4. If you call then, ask
for our program assistant, Tammy Butler (703) 306-1033, and ask for a
copy.

ADDITIONAL ANTARCTIC CONCERNS:

As you know, field space is limited. A field season, if appropriate,
could begin in 95/96. You may have to absorb the person into your
assigned number of field team members, but I'm willing to talk to
Operations on this subject. For Palmer Station, you know the bed/berth
constraints.

Any feedback on this concept is welcome. Polly

                            REU ANNOUNCEMENT
Konza Prairie Research Natural Area (KPRNA) and the Division
of Biology at Kansas State University will offer an NSF funded
Research Experience for Undergraduates in Prairie Ecology in the
summer of 1995. KPRNA is a 3,487 ha native tallgrass prairie
research preserve. and is one of a network of 18 Long-Term
Research Sites (LTER). Additionally, Konza is a major center of
research in the Division of Biology and was founded with the
purpose of studying the tallgrass prairie. Particular foci of
the research are the roles of fire and grazing in maintaining the
tallgrass prairie. Burn regimes are imposed at the watershed
level on cycles that range from one to twenty years. Bison graze
1,000 ha. across many watersheds and other watersheds have been
fenced to contain cattle herds. The combination of fire and
grazing treatments provide a robust experimental manipulation for
the analysis of the influence of these forces.
The LTER component of Konza Prairie focuses on five core
areas: 1) patterns and control of primary production, 2) spatial
and temporal distribution of populations, 3) patterns and control
of organic matter in surface layers and sediments, 4) patterns of
inorganic input through soils, groundwater, and surface water,
and 5) patterns and frequency of disturbance. These will also
serve as the primary focus of the field methods portion of the
REU effort, although students will be exposed to a number of
other projects.
In addition to the PI's, ten scientists associated with
KPRNA and the LTER have agreed to act as mentors for REU
students. Mentors and their field of interest are:

Mentor Field of Interest
Dr. John Blair Nutrient Cycling
Dr. John M. Briggs Remote Sensing / GIS
Dr. Walter Dodds Aquatic Ecology
Dr. David Hartnett Plant Ecology
Dr. Don Kaufman Mammalian Ecology / Evolution
Dr. Dale Kennedy Avian Biology / Conservation

Dr. Chuck Rice Soil Biology
Dr. R. J. Robel Avian Productivity
Dr. Jim Sherow Environmental History
Dr. Chris Smith Plant Reproductive Patterns
Dr. John Zimmerman Avian Ecology

During their stay at Kansas State University, REU students
will be housed in dormitory facilities. Students will be
provided with double room accommodations and 20 meals per week as
a part of their housing package. Dormitories provide low-cost
laundry facilities, kitchen facilities for snack preparation,
television rooms, and recreational areas. Enrollment in summer
school will provide students with access to student health
services, university computing facilities, library facilities,
and all university-sponsored social and recreational programs.
In addition to tuition, housing, and trip expenses, REU students
will be awarded a stipend of $2,500.00 for the ten week period.
Student participants will be selected by a committee
composed of the PI's, and five faculty mentors, one from each of
the five LTER core areas. Students will be evaluated on the
basis of their applications, with most emphasis being placed on a
two-page essay. We anticipate selecting ten participants and
five alternates; if a selected participant cannot attend an
alternate will be offered the slot. Students who wish to be
considered for the REU program offered by KPRNA and the Division
of Biology should send a completed application packet to Dr.
Diane Post. Applications will consist of an official copy of the
students transcript, a list of courses in which the student is
currently enrolled, two letters of recommendation from faculty at
the students home institution, and a two-page essay addressing
1) the develpoment of the students interest in ecology, the
breadth of thie interest in ecology, and current professional
career goals (which need not be in ecological research).
Completed applications are due by 15 February 1995. Students who
wish further information about the REU should contact Dr. Diane
Post, Division of Biology, Kansas State University, Manhattan,

POSTDOCTORAL POSITIONS
Research Associates for North Temperate Lakes LTER Site

The Center for Limnology, University of Wisconsin-Madison, has immediate
openings for 2 full-time (12 months with one renewal) postdoctoral research
associates to develop regional analyses of limnological processes and land-
water interactions. The positions are part of the North Temperate Lakes
Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) program.

A postdoc for REGIONAL COMPARATIVE LIMNOLOGY is intended to develop and
coordinate research addressing issues such as regional effects of climate
change, introduction of exotic species, or landscape alteration on small
inland lakes of the Upper Great Lakes region. The research will primarily
use existing data bases and will involve coordination with several
limnological research centers in the region, including the Center for
Limnology in Wisconsin, the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) in western
Ontario, and the Dorset Research Centre in eastern Ontario. The successful
applicant will be based at the University of Wisconsin's Trout Lake Station
in northcentral Wisconsin. Travel to ELA, Dorset, and Madison and
coordination of workshops for collaborative analyses will be required.

A postdoc for LAND-WATER INTERACTION is intended to synthesize land-use
information for watersheds of Wisconsin lakes, and develop models and
analyses for effects of land-use change on lakes. In northern Wisconsin, we
are interested in effects of forest harvest and compositional change on
flow of groundwater and solutes to lakes, and shoreline and littoral zone
developments associated with tourist use and cottaging. In southern
wisconsin, we are interested in phosphorus loading to lakes as a function
of land-use change (primarily urbanization of agricultural watersheds) and
climate change. This research will primarily use existing data bases. The
successful applicant will be based at the Madison laboratory of the Center
for Limnology.

Both postdocs will be part of an interdisciplinary research team consisting
of aquatic and terrestrial ecologists, water chemists, groundwater
hydrologists, climatologists, remote sensing and GIS specialists, data
managers, and others. Each postdoc will be supervised by two senior
scientists: Tim Kratz, and Monica Turner for regional comparative limnology
and Steve Carpenter and Tom Gower for land-water interaction. The positions
feature competitive salary and fringe benefits. Applications from women
and minority candidates are encouraged. Ph.D. or equivalent degree is
required and preference will be given to those with demonstrated ability in
team-oriented, interdisciplinary research and broad ecological training.
Review of applications will begin 15 December 1994 and continue until the
positions are filled.

Applications, including a curriculum vitae, one-page statement of research
interests, and names of 3 references (please include address, phone, fax
and email for references) should be sent to:

Alice Justice
Center for Limnology

SOLICITATION FOR GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP APPLICATIONS - 1995
                     OFFICE OF EXPLORATORY RESEARCH

INTRODUCTION
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) invites
applications for graduate fellowships in academic disciplines
at the forefront of environmental science and technology:
the physical, biological, and social sciences; mathematics and
computer science; and engineering. These fellowships are
intended to help defray costs associated with advanced
environmentally-oriented study leading to the masters or
doctoral degree. EPA expects to award approximately 100 new
multi-year graduate fellowships in 1995. The remainder of
this notice presents pertinent background information and
describes the application and review process.

BACKGROUND
The mission of the EPA is to provide leadership in the
nation's environmental science, research, education, and
assessment efforts; make sound regulatory and program
decisions; and carry out effective programs and policies to
improve and preserve the quality of the national and global
environment. Science and technology are central to virtually
every aspect of environmental protection and seem certain to
take on progressively greater importance during the
foreseeable future. Both the public and private sectors will
need a steady stream of well-trained environmental scientists
and engineers if our society is to meet the environmental
challenges of the future. Through its office of Research and
Development, the EPA is anticipating that need by offering
financial assistance for advanced study in academic
     disciplines relevant to its mission.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must be citizens of the United States or its
territories or possessions, or lawfully admitted to the United
     States for permanent residence.

EPA graduate fellowships are intended for students already
enrolled in a full-time graduate program at an accredited
     U.S. college or university.

Women, minorities, and disabled students who are pursuing
graduate degrees in one of the eligible fields are especially
     encouraged to apply.

  TENURE

The term of a graduate fellowship is negotiated with
students and ordinarily covers a period of 9 to 12 months for
each fellowship year; funds for unutilized months are
forfeited. Students seeking a masters degree are supported
for a maximum period of two years; students seeking doctoral
degrees are supported for a maximum period of three years.

STIPENDS AND ALLOWANCES

The Graduate Fellowship Program provides up to $34,000 per
year of support. A maximum of $68,000 will be provided for
masters fellows (2 years) while doctoral fellows can receive
up to $102,000 in support (3 years). Individuals accepting
this support may not concurrently hold other Federal
scholarships, fellowships, or traineeships. The $34,000
annual support covers stipend, tuition, and expenses as
     follows:

Stipends during l995-96 will be $17,000 for 12-month
tenures and prorated monthly at a maximum of $1,417 for
shorter periods. Stipends are paid directly to the
Fellow. At its discretion, each fellowship institution
may supplement a Fellow's stipend from institutional
funds in accordance with the supplementation policy of
          the fellowship institution.

Tuition support will be up to $12,000 per year, depending
upon the policies of the fellowship institution, paid
          directly to the institution.

An expense allowance of up to $5,000 (paid to the
institution) will be provided for the direct benefit of
the fellow, e.g., for health insurance, books, supplies,
          and travel to scientific meetings.

EVALUATION AND SELECTION

Each applicant will be evaluated in terms of his/her potential
for successful graduate study, as evidenced by academic
records, faculty recommendations, and career goals and
objectives. Applicants pursuing a masters degree will be
evaluated further on their outlined plan of study and/or
proposed thesis research. Applicants pursuing the doctoral
degree will be evaluated further on the technical merit of
their plan of proposed dissertation research and its relevance
to the EPA mission. Panels of scientists, mathematicians, and
engineers selected by EPA will perform the reviews.

In the review process, the applicants will fall into two
categories: masters and doctoral. Students seeking a masters
degree will compete against each other, and students seeking
a doctoral degree will compete against each other.

Selections of awardees will be made by EPA based on the panel
evaluations, program goals, and availability of funds. The
written evaluation summarizing the review panel's findings
will be made available to the applicant.

                               POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Assistant Researcher Position in Remote Sensing and Geographic
Information Systems Applied to Long-Term Ecological Research

                          University of Wisconsin-Madison

The Center for Limnology and the Environmental Remote Sensing Center of
the University of Wisconsin-Madison are offering a full-time (12-month)
Assistant Researcher position in the area of remote sensing and geographic
information systems (GIS) applied to long-term ecological research. Duties
will primarily involve the continued development, coordination, and linkage
of numerous remote sensing and GIS initiatives undertaken as part of long-
term and large scale aquatic and terrestrial ecosystem research conducted by
an interdisciplinary team of investigators associated with the North
Temperate Lakes (NTL) site of the NSF-funded Long-Term Ecological Research
(LTER) program. Work will be based on the University of Wisconsin-Madison
campus but the research program in which the incumbent will participate has
a regional focus on lakes, watersheds, and lake/landscapes ranging
geographically from southern Wisconsin to Ontario, Canada. The research is
organized to address scientific questions dealing with such varied issues as
the influence of temporal and spatial scale in understanding limnological and
landscape processes, climatic and hydrologic factors, natural and human-
induced ecosystem disturbances, links between lakes and landscapes, human-
lake interactions, and limnological consequences of alternative scenarios of
future land use.

The incumbent to this position must be self motivated, able and willing
to help fashion and participate in team-oriented interdisciplinary research,
and simultaneously develop and conduct their own research program within the
broader context of this position. Day-to-day duties will range from
providing hardware/software and database development support to other
researchers on the project to substantive involvement in data analysis and
research synthesis. Employee will be expected to prepare reports,
manuscripts, and posters detailing his/her research and to present results at
national meetings. Duties will also include assisting in the preparation of
grant proposals related to this research. The extensive facilities of both
the Environmental Remote Sensing Center and the Center for Limnology will be
made available to the successful candidate for this position.

The individual assuming this position will also serve as a liaison in
the general area of remote sensing and GIS between the NTL site and the LTER
Network of sites. Network activities currently range from intersite image
analyses, to operation of sun photometers for atmospheric correction of
remotely sensed data, to LTER/NASA initiatives as part of the Earth Observing
System (EOS) program. Opportunities for interdisciplinary scientific
interaction and collaboration on a national and international level are a
major benefit of such LTER Network activities.

The starting date for this position is February 1, 1995, or as soon
thereafter as a suitable candidate is found. The initial term of employment
end June 30, 1996 and is renewable based on performance and the availability
of funding. Preference will be given to candidates having a Ph.D. in
ecology, the mapping sciences, or a related field, with experience in
applying remote sensing and GIS methods to ecological problems. Individuals
holding the Ph.D. or M.S. in any field will be considered if they offer
substantive experience on the quantitative aspects of remote sensing and GIS
system development and application. Proficiency in the use of image
processing (e.g., ERDAS) and GIS (e.g., ARC/INFO) software required. Review
of applicants will begin January 15, 1995 and continue until the position is
filled.

Applicants are asked to send a cover letter specifying how their
background and interests parallel the basic requirements of the position, a
resume, and the names, telephone numbers, fax numbers, and email addresses of
at least three professional references to:
