2/8/91 Converted Cobb file from ERDAS to ARC/INFO. The cobb.zoo file also has a cobb1.gis file, but it looked as if it had some errors and so was not used. There are quite a few small areas that are probably dig. errors. They can be eliminated using the eliminate command and selecting area < 50. Also converted files for Parramore, Wreck, Cedar to coverages of those names. 2/9/91 Created metomkin and smith coverages. Ran eliminate on all files with the criterion that AREA < 50 would be eliminated. New coverages were metomkin1 etc. For hog the original file was hogrog2 but the new coverage was named hog21 for brevity. Also printed out maps with weedtol=0.005 and textsize=0.03. Maps were named variants on junk. 2/14/91 Corrected codes on Cedar map that were > 26. Added one missing polygon resulting coverage is cedar2. 2/20/91 Created coverages parrdig1-3 that contained tic marks for approximately 20 points that could be located both on the USGS map of Parramore and the veg map. These points were located using ERDAS and the utm coordinates place in the tic files using INFO and adding TICID, XTIC and YTIC from the keyboard. The transform command was then used to convert the parr11-parr31 coverages into parrdig1 etc. There was a marked improvement in the degree of correspondance. 2/24/91 Edited parrdig2 and parrdig3 to remove boundaries an common polygons. Used ERASE program to eliminate overlap of parrdig2 on parrdig1 to create parrdig21. ERASE of parrdig3 on parrdig21 is still needed. 3/01/91-3/15/91 Created combined coverage parram out of erased coverages. Edited to correct problems at join-junctions due to inconsistant overlaps. parram2 was plotted out and overlayed on McCaffrey and Dueser (1990) map. changes were noted and digitized into coverages parram3 and parram4. A DIGITIZING NOTE: use ads command in arc to orient map on digitizer prior to adding features using coordinate digitizer in arcedit. 3/19/91 Cleaned up label errors for Parramore -- cleaned coverage is in PARRAM5. Similar for Hog island in HOG22 -- one error still noted for perimeter polygon but it does not appear serious. Recoded grid-code values for Cobb island (which were non-standard in the original ERDAS file) according to the following scheme 1-4 = 1-4, 5=7,6=10, 7-10 = 15-18 11=22, 12-14= 24-26, 0=20 (where the first number or range is the original Cobb code and the second number or range is the standard code). Also corrected a shrub stand incorrectly identified as water. HERE IS A LIST OF THE STANDARD CODES AND THEIR VEGETATION EQUIVALENTS GRID-CODE VEG_CODE VEG_CLASS 0 w Water/background 1 A Foredune Grassland 2 G Dense Grassland 3 AG Beachgrass Dunes/ Dense Grassland Dunes 4 g Sparse Grassland 5 Ag Foredune - Sparse Grassland Complex 6 At Open Dunes - Thicket Complex 7 B Beach 8 T Tall Thicket 9 AT Open Dunes - Thicket Complex 10 t Low Thicket 11 J Juniper Thicket 12 P Pine Forest 13 H Hardwood Forest 14 PH Pine-Hardwood Forest Complex 15 m Low Salt Marsh 16 Mm Upper Low Salt Marsh 17 M Brackish Marsh 18 s Salt Flat 19 F Fresh Marsh 20 w Open Water 21 dr Drift 22 b Submerged Sand 23 uw Underwater Flora (or Fauna) 24 peat "Peat" Outcrops 25 wf Wash Flat 26 mf Mud Flat 3/20/91 Corrected cobb2 and rebuilt coverage plotted wreck1, smith1, cedar2. Smith1 plot seems too small. 3/28/91 Corrected wreck1 coverage. Switched tics around to reorient Metomkin1 via metomflip. The final reoriented and corrected coverage is in metomkin2. 3/29/91 Worked on cedar2 coverage, but at some point the grid-codes associated with polygons became completely scrambled. Cedar2 needs to be recreated from cedar1 cover. 6/21/91 Plotted all covers processed so far. Smith and Cobb covers need to be georeferenced. 07/27/91 Corrected Cobb cover to produce COBB3 cover. Smith still remains to be done. 10/03/91 Used the rectified DELMARTMR TM image to add some tic marks to smith2 (an edited version of smith1). Created the rectified coverage SMITH3. Although fairly accurate to scale, registration is approximate with RMS errors in the tic coverage of approximately 60 m. 10/03/91 Original maps arrived. Started digitizing Myrtle map. 10/09/91 Corrections on Myrtle map finished. Continuing on Smith3. Tried out SPLINE with a grain of 10 and GENERALIZE with a tolerance of 5 on the HOG22 and Parram5 covers with outputs to HOG23s, HOG23G5, PARRAM6S and PARRAM6G5 covers (s for spline, G5 for Generalize). Outputs were made to SDF files for comparisons of area/perimeter. It appears that the process may lose some small polygons as some label errors show up. 10/10/91 Corrections made to Smith3. Should be done. Set up TIC file for SHIPSHOAL, but did not digitize yet. 1/15/92 Tried out spline with grain of 3 m. Seemed to good job on Wreck1 -> Wreck1s3. Ran spline with grain=3 on all maps. 1/16/92 Worked on correcting topology and label errors. Hog22s3, Parram5s3, ShipShoals3, and Cobb3s3 are done. Cedar3s3 has been worked on to create CEDAR4S3, but may need some more work. Metomkin2s3 needs a final check. Smith has not been worked on. 1/28/92 Made some location corrections on Metomkin to create METOMKIN3S3. PARRAM5s3 lacks island data, so I recreated it. Smith looks OK. 7/21/92 Created parram6 from parram5. There appeared to be 3 polys with parram5-id = 80, parram6-id was renumbered to = parram6# using info and then idedit was used to reestablish the correspondance between the PAT and coordinates. This fixed it, except that one large marsh polygon still shows up as being outside the island. This needs to be fixed as it could affect results in the statistical analyses. 7/22/92 Worked on parram6 to correct a number of errors that had crept in. These included a number of large mislabeled polygons. All known errors corrected. 7/24/92 Corrections to parram6 corrected. New SDF file created.
