Map Design

EVSC-468/796 Spring 2003

Your assignment is to create two documents that use GIS technologies to create a map document that serves a specified purpose. For example, to delineate an area (or areas) that are to be used for preservation (or development).  The documents are to take two forms:

  1. An electronic map. This may take the form of an individual .JPG file, a Powerpoint slide, or an interactive ARCVIEW or ARCGIS page. It should be capable of clear display on an 800x600 display.

  1. A tri-fold pamphlet using only black and white. For simplicity, the pamphlet should be on one side of an 8.5”x11” piece of paper with the panel order being left to right. Orientation of the pamphlet is at your discretion (portrait or landscape).

Data for the presentations are online on the class WWW page in the Materials section, or for the larger coverages, on a CD at the Science and Engineering Library Reserve Desk. They consist of data for four regions. The Morven.zip (19 MB) file contains GIS data for the Morven Farm property while the Northampton.zip (6 MB)  file contains GIS data for Northampton Co. VA on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. The Northampton Co. file contains extensive metadata. Use the index.htm file to access this metadata. All the Northampton data uses the UTM projection.  The Morven Farm data uses explanatory names for the individual shape files and has a Powerpoint presentation from the students who originally compiled the data. It is in the State Plane projection. The La Selva data is from the La Selva Biological Station in Costa Rica. Metadata is available at: http://www.ots.duke.edu/en/laselva/gis.shtml. TIGER and some image data for Charlottesville is available on the CD in the CVILLE directory. You are free to use your imagination to fill in any necessary details not provided by the metadata.
