Your assignment is to create a document that uses GIS technologies to create a map document that serves a specified purpose. For example, to delineate an area (or areas) that are to be used for preservation (or development). You should clearly identify what the purpose of the map is and who the population of map users would consist of. The document can take one of two forms:

1.An electronic map. This may take the form of an individual .JPG file, a Powerpoint slide, or an interactive ARCGIS page. It should be capable of clear display on an 800x600 display.

2.A tri-fold pamphlet using only black and white. For simplicity, the pamphlet should be on one side of an 8.5”x11” piece of paper with the panel order being left to right. Orientation of the pamphlet is at your discretion (portrait or landscape).

Data for the presentations are online on the class WWW page in the Downloads section. They consist of data for four regions. The Morven.zip (19 MB) file contains GIS data for the Morven Farm property while the Northampton.zip (62 MB) file contains GIS data for Northampton Co. VA on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. The Northampton Co. file contains extensive metadata. Use the index.htm file to access this metadata. All the Northampton data uses the UTM projection. The Morven Farm data uses explanatory names for the individual shape files and has a Powerpoint presentation from the students who originally compiled the data. It is in the State Plane projection. TIGER and some image data for Charlottesville is available in the cville.zip (17 MB) source file. You are free to use your imagination to fill in any necessary details not provided by the metadata.

Instructions on creating a .JPG image file from ARCGIS are as follows:

    1. in layout view in ARCMAP select File/Export Map
    2. specify the name and disk location for the file,
    3. hit the “options” button on the lower left. Specify a dots per inch that will yield a size of approximately 800x600 pixels
    4. hit “save” to create your .jpg file
