Specialization in Environmental
& Biological Conservation

The University of Virginia has both Undergraduate and Graduate Programs designed to provide students a strong background in conservation biology. These programs combine the Biology Department's strength in structure and function of organisms, population biology and evolution with the focus on ecology and the structure and function of environments in the Department of Environmental Sciences. Undergraduate students majoring in either Biology or Environmental Sciences may enroll in the Specialization. The Specialization requirements are the same for both majors (see links below) and include introductory courses in conservation biology, an advanced seminar, and courses in which students focus on biological diversity, environmental diversity and practical techniques used to study conservation. In addition, a field course requirement that may be met either through independent research or a field-based course provides students with hand-on experience in conservation and related areas. Courses taken for the Specialization fulfill some (but not all) of the degree requirements in both majors.

If you would like more information about the Specialization, please contact Laura Galloway (lgalloway@virginia.edu) in the Biology Department or Deborah Lawrence (dl3c@virginia.edu) in the Department of Environmental Sciences.

We encourage you to register for the Specialization, even if you are not yet sure, so we can inform you of events relevant to conservation biology at UVA!
