Schoolyard 2001

The Schoolyard LTER (SLTER) Subcommittee coordinated by Rich Boone (BNZ,

researcher), Marianne Krasny (CAP, educator), Karen Baker (PAL, information

manager), and Patty Sprott (LTER Network Office representative) held a meeting

to address goals and activities in December 01 as a post Snowbird Meeting

supported by the LTER Network Office.  A 2-page report was created and

subsequently distributed to the LTER IM Exec Coordinating Committees.  A

Schoolyard LTER cross-site poster was presented at the August Ecological

Society of America Meeting. Cross-site schoolyard LTER activities include biome

module development (CAP, Monica Elser), collaboration with the National Science

Teacher's Association (HBR, Marianne Krasny) and a request regarding potential

education metadata modules to be integrated within developing metadata

structures of the KNB/BDI/LTER metadata group. A KBS site K12 partnership

for science literacy was recently funded by NSF (EHR) as a joint effort

among KBS LTER scientists, MSU College of Education secondary science

educators, and science teachers in 12 rural and semi-rural school districts

in southwest Michigan. A deeper exposure to ecological science is planned

for teachers through workshops and summer institutes.
