U.S. LTER Network National Research Sites with a Common Commitment
    LTER Sites Online Datasets

Last updated: 23 July 1996 by M. Hartman
The following table summarizes the current availability, through Gopher and the World Wide Web, of documented datasets (i.e., data + metadata) across the LTER Network. Detailed information regarding the methodology for generation/maintenance of this table, as well as complete site names and locations corresponding to the abbreviations used in the table, is appended below.

    SITE ABBREVIATIONS

Complete site names and locations corresponding to abbreviations used in the table are:

AND (H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest, Blue River, Oregon), ARC (Arctic Tundra, Toolik Lake, Brooks Range, Alaska), BNZ (Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest, Fairbanks, Alaska), CDR (Cedar Creek Natural History Area, Minneapolis, Minnesota), CWT (Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory, Otto, North Carolina), HFR (Harvard Forest, Petersham, Massachusetts), HBR (Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, West Thornton, New Hampshire), JRN (Jornada Basin, Las Cruces, New Mexico), KBS (W.K. Kellogg Biological Station, Hickory Corners, Michigan), KNZ (Konza Prairie Research Natural Area, Manhattan, Kansas), LUQ (Luquillo Experimental Forest, near San Juan, Puerto Rico), MCM (McMurdo Dry Valleys, McMurdo Station, Antarctica), NWT (Niwot Ridge/Green Lakes Valley, near Boulder, Colorado), NTL (North Temperate Lakes, near Boulder Junction, Wisconsin), PAL (Palmer Station, Antarctica), SGS (Shortgrass Steppe, formerly Central Plains Experimental Range, Nunn, Colorado), SEV (Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, near Albuquerque, New Mexico), and VCR (Virginia Coast Reserve, near Oyster, Virginia).

    NOTES

It should be noted that sites often have additional, proprietary data available to the site researchers and that some of these data might be available, on a per-case basis, upon request. In addition, descriptions or documentation (i.e., metadata) are frequently online for such data.

The table is not intended to provide any indication of the quantity or scope of the data available, nor does it reflect spatial or temporal extent.

Additional entries will be made to the table as the need arises.

    METHODOLOGY

In order to ensure the continued manageability of the table, general categories of data were used. These categories will be subsequently created/divided/merged if necessary to maintain the usefulness and manageability of the table. A few comments regarding the categories are warranted:

Entries under the "animal" category include species lists, species abundance, individual organism measurements (e.g., weights, sizes).
Entries for "primary production/biomass" include proxy measurements such as basal area, diameter, etc.
Entries for "atmospheric deposition" include precipitation chemistry, as well as wet, bulk, and dry deposition.
Entries under the "soil (water) chemistry" category include both soil and soil water chemistry, as well as non-surface water chemistry.
Entries under the "water flow/discharge" category include stream, lake, and groundwater flow/discharge.
There is overlap for the "disturbance effects" and "fertilization effects" categories, with an entry in the latter being equivalent to an automatic entry in the former.

    LTER Core Dataset Catalog

The LTER Core Dataset Catalog was generated in 1990 to list a limited number of core datasets from each LTER site. It has not been updated (see above for a more current listing of LTER Data Resources). Click here to search the Core Dataset Catalog.
