The basic monitoring program will be conducted in Old Plantation
Creek, Cherrystone Creek, Sand Shoal Channel, Phillips Creek and
Machipongo River. Three or four sampling stations will be
established at the selected creeks with samples collected every
four weeks during the cold part of the year and every two weeks
during June to August. Upstream and downstream stations will be
sampled to determine spatial variability in paramaters within each
creek or site. During each sampling period, water samples will be
collected in clean containers and then iced down to minimize
microbial activity. After collecting ancillary water quality
parameters, such as temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen,
transparency, depth and tidal stage, samples will be brought to the
LTER laboratory in Oyster, Virginia and analyzed for the following
dissolved nutrients: ammonium, nitrate, nitrite and phosphate.
Subsamples will be collected and analyzed for BOD, total suspended
solids and chlorophyll content. </para>
<para>Field protocols and analytical procedures are described in the
attached technical handbook.</para>
<para>Primary water quality parameters will be measured continously in
selected sites on the bayside (Nassawadox Creek / Cherrystone
Creek) and the seaside (Phillips Creek / Red Bank Creek) with
HYDROLAB H20 water quality transmitters. The variability in
turbidity will be determined using submersible PAR sensors designed
to estimate light extinction coefficients.</para>
