Dataset Description

The long-term record of annual precipitation begins in 1837, the first year of systematic recording of precipitation amounts at Fort Monroe, Hampton Roads, VA. This remarkable record continued until 1985. Subsequent to 1985, precipitation records come from the NOAA meteorological station at the Norfolk International Airport.
Publications using data from the Virginia Coast Reserve Long-Term Ecological Research Project should cite the dataset and its originators. Additionally, they should include the following paragraph:
Some data used in this publication was provided by the Virginia Coast Reserve LTER project, which was supported by National Science Foundation grants BSR-8702333-06, DEB-9211772, DEB-9411974, DEB-0080381 and DEB-0621014.

Project Description and Goals

To build an inventory of tropical storms on the VCR from 1650 to present. While tropical storms are infrequent (several landfalls per 100 years) the magnitude of the disturbance is great. Storm surges 10 feet plus are expected with waves of 17 to 23 feet offshore. The record being developed will serve as a benchmark and will serve when the next tropical storm comes. Comparisons of frequency and magnitude can be detailed and can be used in model studies.
