In order to make the biodiversity search page load faster, I've added a
"static" version of the global searches. Instead of the search page being
generated by a search of the database (which is getting slow as the database
expands), I've generated a "fixed" version of the page that should load MUCH
faster. The dynamic (slow) version of the page is available via a link on
the new page. At this point, all the data should be in (we are now up to
7100 observations!) so there will not be much difference between the two.
There has also been concern about searches based on latitude or longitude.
When you do a search, it lists all the Organism types, orders, genera etc.
that occurred inside the designated box. However when you then do an
additional query on a genus (or other taxanomic unit) it lists ALL the
species in that genus (regardless of whether they occur in the selected
area). This is actually the way the system was designed to operate - it just
does a first-order breakdown as to the types that occur there. More detailed
searching will require some additional system development. A manual
way around this problem is to note down the species IDs that occur at
the locations within the search area (from the location search box)
and then compare them with the list of species IDs for the group of
interest.
Hopefully this is the last message on system development!!! Have a
good summer!
